Flares – Tunnel Vision // Castle Of Cards
For people who like: Artic Monkeys, The Kooks, Cage The Elephant, The Whitestripes
FLARES consists of four members: Arthur (lead vocals), Edie (bass/vocals), Leo (guitar) and Reuben (drums). Formed in 2017, this young, up and coming band from Birmingham have been performing everywhere; after headlining The Institute in late 2018 they have performed at popular Birmingham venue The Sunflower Lounge (where they properly impressed IndieMidlands.com writer Ross Carley), Oxjam Brum and the O2 Academy! ‘Tunnel Vision // Castle of Cards’ is their debut release.
‘Tunnel Vision’ – The first A side on this double feature is an atmospheric grunge-y indie track, with beautifully layered vocals (the initial use of Edie’s vocals to highlight Arthur’s is particularly effective). The whole song is lyrically strong and the chorus is an ear worm waiting to happen featuring phrases like “breathe in slowly/ someone hold me/ far from lonely /do you really know me?”. A perfect introduction to FLARES; and you can hear it here .
‘Castle Of Cards’ – My personal favourite between the two, Castle Of Cards is somewhat reminiscent of the Arctic Monkeys or Cage The Elephant, but it also manages to retain enough of the FLARES sound to one day be considered one of their classics. As well as exceeding my expectations lyrically, ‘Castle of Cards’ also does more to demonstrate the growing abilities of these young musicians, the second half of the release stands of a foundation of harder drums and heavier guitars, earning FLARES the ‘Rock’ in ‘Indie Rockers’.
Despite their youth (unbelievably they are all under 18), it is impossible to dismiss FLARES as ‘just another teenage band’. These are very talented musicians, turning out some decent indie rock with a grunge-y, punk twist and I look forward to hearing more from them in the future.
Score out of 7/10
