It’s fair to say Hachiku, the moniker of Anika Ostendorf, has travelled. Born in Detroit but raised in Germany, she has since lived in London and now Melbourne. And today she is back with new single ‘Shark Attack’.
For anyone familiar with Hachiku’s music the angelic and otherworldy sound won’t come as a surprise as she has a knack for making the most beautiful melancholic songs, topped off with her delicate and sweet vocal. ‘Shark Attack’ is a welcome return for Hachiku.
Talking about the track she explains:
“If you’re like my friend Tushara you might think this song is about oral sex, whereas it’s ACTUALLY about my little dog BFF Lexus being diagnosed with throat cancer and all the sadness it comes with. In a very romanticized teenage way, my dog always was a placeholder for other things I was missing – pets offer such companionship, unconditional love and comfort that makes it extra hard to say goodbye to them, in particular when you’re thousands of km’s away.
HAPPY ENDING ALERT: Lexus is still fine for now, so no need to be sad.”
I actually have a nice Hachiku story. Pretty much exactly a year ago a friend and myself decided instead of travelling home to Birmingham from Sheffield, where we had been the night before for a gig, we would instead get the train to Nottingham first to see Hachiku play a free show at Rough Trade. I sent Anika a Facebook message in the day asking if there was any chance she could get us guestlist to then see her support Snail Mail after the Rough Trade set at The Bodega, which she very kindly did despite not knowing either of us. I have to say she was one of the sweetest, friendliest people you could ever wish to meet. 🙂
