Middle Space – Night Terrors
For people who like: psychedelic indie rock, Mr. Mister, Peach Pit.
MIDDLE SPACE is Mark Tolley (vocals, guitar, synth), Haydn Sayce (guitar), Ryan Egan (bass), Jake Brickley (guitar) and Ben Neat (drums). In their own words they are “delicious indie rock cocktail, crafted with a healthy dose of big sing-along choruses and some loud, alcohol-induced guitar riffs, finished off with a squeeze of the psychedelic lemon”.
Formed in Telford, Shropshire in 2015 the 5 piece has been in the studio (‘Night Terrors’ is their third single of 2018) and actively gigging at multiple venues that included (among others) the 02 Academy, The Sunflower Lounge and The Newhampton Arts Centre ever since. Because of this they have a well established fan base in both Telford and across the West Midlands who will no doubt be delighted with this latest offering.
‘Night Terrors’ is somewhat lacking in their self-declared trademark “big sing-along choruses” but it is moody and subtle and very well made. There are heavier riffs for those that want them, but also almost ethereal emotive vocals to bring it back down. As well as being a haunting broody piece of music the single is lyrically strong with imagery-laden lines like ‘leave this town behind, the lion’s den will never be too kind, find a place where no one knows my name’ which definitely leave room for future me to hear/interpret new things with each successive listen. The band say they think this is the best song they’ve ever written and I’m inclined to agree with them.
Night Terrors is available now on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp and YouTube.
